Introduce Yourself Here

If you plan on joining the iPhone App Development Study Group this summer, please introduce yourself here.

I'll start:

Name: Simon Dorfman
A little bit about me: Interested in creating (abstract strategy) games for iPhone/iPad. More artist background than programmer, but I keep hacking at things and I'm slowly learning a thing or two about coding.

James Thompson

I am a web application developer here in New Orleans and leader of the Ruby user group here in New Orleans, Ruby Bayou. I am interested in iPhone development primarily as it could relate to the work I do as a web application developer and allow me to extend my offerings to my clients.

Mark Anderson

Apple Fanboi Emeritus.

Apple Developer from way back in the days before color Macs and when external disk drives were capable of storing multiple MBs of data. First employee of Macintosh software company Palomar Software (http://www.palomar.com/About/History.html). Author of the easy to forget "Writing Device Drivers for the Macintosh" in the December 1988 issue of BYTE magazine.

Still a tax paying citizen of the People's Republic of Apple (aka $99 poorer member of the developer program).

Have already worked thru a couple different semesters of the iTunes University iPhone Development classes at Stanford, but figure I'll join the study group to motivate myself to actually do something with what I've been learning.

Have an interest in anything shiny, whether it has an Apple logo or not.

Re: Introduction Yourself Here

Name: Chris Jones

Hi, I'm an addict. I've been messing with computers for a good 20 years or so. I've been an active member of NOLUG for about 4 years now. I've shown up to a few 2600 meetings, and a Ruby meeting as well. I have an iPad, and would like to write script kiddie apps for it. (just kidding) I'm still not sure if I can make it or not, but I want to try. I think these new tablet devices have a ton of potential, and I would love to be able to get in on it, and maybe put together some tools that do useful things on it. As of now, the apps available for the iPad are fairly useless and don't really do anything that a regular computer can't do. I've been heading a musical project, Doomsday Technologies, for the past 2 years. So far we have 4 members: Me, a keyboardist, and 2 guitarists. We make industrial rock music, which is electronic music with guitars in it. Maybe I could write some cool music apps for the iPad or something.

Otherwise, some interesting things about me:
Certifications: MCSE 2000, MCSE 2003, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator 2008, MCDBA, A+, Net+, Server+
I actively use systems running Windows XP, Vista, and 7, as well as OSX Snow Leopard and (mostly ubuntu these days) Linux.
Some various white and not-so-white hat accomplishments that I'll avoid mentioning to avoid incriminating myself in any way. LOL

I also have an upcoming web project that I've been brainstorming with a couple of other people, and if we determine that it's feasible, we might be looking to recruit some more people like ourselves, and this could become a big internet startup with huge money making potential. Imagine a corporation where the entire board of directors are a bunch of techies with a passion for learning and pushing the boundaries of what technology can do. It would be a very nimble company, and everything would be built from the ground up "the right way". Google is like this, and it's a terrific business model. I have A.D.D. and I would be willing to bet that at least 90% of you guys probably do as well... The A.D.D. way of thinking causes people to really invest themselves in what they do, and look at knowledge as an artform. Anyways, I don't really want to reveal a lot of details of the project yet, "trade secrets" and all that, yadda yadda yadda, etc... But if you guys are looking for something cool to get involved with, the people involved in Gumbo Labs would be one of my first choices of people to get in on this. I'll stay in touch. ;)

Hunter

Have an iPhone, my sole apple product. Hate it, but while I have it I'd might as well make my best, after all I've been coming up with ideas all over.

My programming experience isn't huge, some java, php, looked into python a little. Took a C++ class maybe 8 years ago? Don't remember much. Plus the apple machine I have closest access to is my mom's air... but why turn down some free knowledge?

Re: Introduction Yourself Here

Hey, I'm Brad. I plan on coming to these to finally learn some iPhone programming. I dont know objective C and I havent worked in a development environment that relies on compilers since college. I work at Mudbug Media as an Application Developer, doing PHP and Rails work. Work's just too busy to learn iPhone development on company time, and the daily commute pretty much turns me into a TV vegetable once I get home at night, so this classroom-style iPhone study group is probably my best shot at learning it.

As of 2008 I hadnt used any Apple products before, but in January, my boss gave us ipod nanos as XMas bonuses. A few months later I got an iMac at work, since all the other developers used them. A few months later I got an iPhone 3g. And then a few months later we bought an iMac for the house. And I'm jonesing for an iPad, but will likely wait til the 2nd gen for that. So between work and home, I have lots of opportunities to work on Apple products, and create for them. I just need to learn how.

Re: Introduce Yourself Here

Hello,

My name is Baron and I grew up tossing source codes together for different projects. I currently repair computers and just finished my last day as an RSD intern. Very amusing job. I don't own an iPhone, or a sufficient laptop to bring- mine require lots of jerry rigging to work properly.

I know syntax and basic algorithms, sorts, database connectivity. I'm from Metairie, but I do get around the city a lot lately since I've been picking up some clients out there.

I am definitely interested in seeing how this goes, as I didn't have the willpower to sit myself down and force myself to watch this. Thanks for this opportunity.

Probably will not be doing assignments, but will be following the lecture I think. Probably going to be studying the cross platform airplaysdk in parallel.
